Pleasant Dreams, Emma Sandys (1876)
Pleasant Dreams
Holding thy love letter so tenderly
Closing my eyes so that thee I may see
Thou art here smiling majestically
Yet my heart aches for I’m not touching thee
Darkness has been my companion for hours
I have reread thy words less I forget
Those beautiful words of love that is ours
Under my pillow thy letter will set
Clutching my pillow as if it were true
My heart is not to be easily fooled
Thy scent on its pillowcase makes me blue
But touch thy letter desire refueled
Thy absence exciting thoughts can provide
Knowing that our hearts together are tied
