Eyes, the Pathway to the Heart
Love to study your eyes in the day light
Twinkling coded messages that they send
Even you cannot keep them from my sight
Like crystal balls the future they portend
Does not matter that your eyes are sky blue
Only determined by what’s felt inside
Looking at you can see your heart be true
For your eyes glow when fully opened wide
Come very close and look into my eyes
Follow the path deeply into my heart
Can you now see that it wears no disguise
Can you see a reason we’d ever part
In loving the eyes have so much to say
A special look many hearts they can sway
The Outskirts of the Fontainebleau Forest, Alfred Sisley (1885)
Decades of Love
They walk down the twisting path hand in hand,
The leaves are golden as their many years.
At this juncture they make but few demands,
No more will they be spilling precious tears.
Life’s journey put them on this path before.
Ground is nearly barren beneath their feet.
Both understanding what is next in store,
No extensions will both ever entreat.
The warming sun is at their bending backs.
Turning to each other giving a smile,
Seeing a bench, now is time to relax.
Great love between, there is no denial.
A love they thought started just yesterday,
Counting the decades to their own dismay.
Still Life with Shoes, Emil Carlsen (c.1915)
There is a large box in the center hall
Containing something more precious than gold
They’re what some may choose to hang on a wall
Symbols of memories from young to old
Wherever traveled my shoes took me there
Be it smooth road or rugged mountain trail
In a year’s time often had but a pair
Some failed as I walked through the nearby swale
Looking closely at my laced up new ones
Wondering what new travels are in store
Now must wary about these bunions
Shan’t detour desire of many miles more
Life is a journey of countless footsteps
Over worn shoes are signs of my journey
Scuffs and scrapes memories of my missteps
But their creases have captured life’s beauty
